Auto Insurance in Mexico?

This is the fourth in a series of guest posts by Mexico Mike about driving, insurance and documentation requirements in Mexico. During his tenure with Sanborn’s Mexico Insurance Service, Mike acquired an encyclopedic knowledge of Mexico’s highways. His familiarity with nation’s roadways and unique perspective on why he believes the country is safer than the U.S. was the subject this New York Times story.

On his Web site, Mike offers driving tips, maps, and information on insurance requirements. He is also an expert on spas and hot springs in Mexico.

You must have Mexican auto insurance to drive in Mexico – even to go across to a border town. You will not go to jail for an accident if you have insurance. You will go to jail for an accident if you do not. Those are the facts.wallet

One international insurance company, USAA works with GE Seguros, but it’s a rider and you still pay for it. Prices for Mexican insurance have plummeted in the last ten years. A liability-only policy is around $200 for a year. All reputable carriers charge pretty much the same (except for Baja or Sonora-specific policies).

Too Good to Be True. Beware of somebody offering a dirt-cheap policy on the Internet. You may get dirt for coverage. If you are just driving in Baja or Sonora, you can get a very inexpensive policy from a reliable company.

Go to www.mexicomike.com and click the floating vehicles or “Compare Vehicle Insurance.” I honestly compare three major insurance companies. I know the owners of each. They are not the only ones that are good, but they are definitely reasonably-priced and decent companies.
